This song by Carly Rae Jepsen has all of the conventions bared by a typical popsong, and it doesn't differ in the music video. This video opens with a close up showing Carly central of the frame, conveying her importance to the potential narrative we are bound to be presented with. This is very shortly confirmed as we see her staring lustfully at an "attractive" male character. This is the introduction of probably the most common ingredient of a typical pop narrative, and that is love interest. However in this case the stereotype is tenuously altered so that she is pursuing the male character. The element of performance is then introduced in typical fashion, as we see the "popstar" taking centre stage, owning the majority of the shot time, while the other band members are barely introduced, This increases the stars appeal. As the song continues we see the implementation of what i would call safe humour. The girl begins making a fool of herself while attempting to gain this males attention. This use of safe humour is incredibly common in pop music videos, as they tend not to be controversial, thus appealing to the masses as a pose to a niche audience. After this short interval we again see the performance aspect of the video. The picture during this scene has been feminised with delicate colour filters, making the background seem almost misty while the singers attractive features (Lips and eyes) stand out amongst the background. This is incredibly typical of pop music videos, especially those with female stars. This whole music video is essentially one big cliche, as it ticks all of the boxes for a video in the pop genre over the last 7 or 8 years

• This video again conforms to the levels of high energy expected from bands in the hardcore genre. However this video tends to rely more on these levels of high energy, as this particular video has no narrative, but the high energy levels help keep the viewer entertained and to help refrain from viewer fatigue.

• The bands attire in this music video also plays a huge part in making the band conform to the genre. The drummer is shown, having a heavily tattooed body and long black hair, and the other members are shown wearing black clothes. matching the colourless mise-en-scene. This again is a reflection of the music, its themes, and what we expect from a music video belonging to this genre.

• This video actually makes an acception to the original formula, in the sense that the lead singer actually features in most of the shot time, where the band usually all share an equal amount of shot time. This could potentially be an attempt to show the importance of the lead vocalist. The fact that he is actually closer to the camera and featured centrally also suggests that he is leading the group.

Rock music videos tend to follow a particular formula, in terms of performance and narrative. This particular music video is exemplary for demonstrating the conventions of a typical rock video:

• This video features the persona bared by almost all heavy rock music videos today, in terms of the bands performance, and presence. The band are displayed as being very energetic, matching the pace of the music, and conforming to our ideas about rock music being expressive and somewhat aggressive. All members are hugely active throughout the duration of the video, and at no point is any member static.

 

• This video also conforms to the typical use of lighting in heavy rock music videos. This video seems to have a significant lack of lighting, to again convey the aggressive attitude shared, to conform to all the themes of heavy rock, and to also give the video a sinister mise-en-scene. Dim lighting is used to spotlight specific instruments displaying the technicality of each part.

• This particular video also uses the element of a narrative to accompany the performance. This is typically implemented to create a more interesting music video and to help refrain from causing viewer fatigue. The narrative shows a series of tranquil locations, which enters upon the change of dynamics in the song, as the song becomes more melodic. This is incredibly typical of music videos in the hardcore genre, as the narrative tends to reflect the phrase of the song.

• This video also follows the conventional formula of rock music videos, as during the performance element, each member of the band has an equal amount of shot time. This is a unique element of the genre, as other genres music videos tend to idolise the Lead vocalist, such as pop videos. This quick change between band members is refreshing, and keeps the viewer following and entertained.
